The original Constitution provided the states with the ability to rule themselves. The Union’s intention was for the states to have an international representation, as well as a common military. Much of what the United States has become today, is not what it should be: see 10th Amendment.
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
A Secession with a still existent Federal Government makes no sense. If the 50 states were to go their separate way, States would form coalitions to gain more power over other smaller states, and for military purpose.
